At the same time, some of the best artists over the past 80 years couldn’t play anything more than a power chord.
Musicians have a problem where we collect a lot of tools. Whether it is practicing a difficult guitar sweep technique or studying music theory from dead composers, only to never use what we learn to create a piece of music that reflects who we are as a musicians.
We collect tools to create something that truly reflects us but then let those tools gather dust as we go out to learn more, to get better, to finally have permission to write a song.
I used to be like this. I was a progressive metal and jazz snob. I went to music school, and after playing music for 15 years I realized I had only written 5 songs.
Why?
Because the writing, recording, producing and mixing process was a complete mystery to me.
I was a musician who didn’t create music
This challenge lays out exactly how to ..
Write, record, produce and mix in the next 40 days
We focus on creating, not just collecting more tools.
It is for musicians at every level who understand that their next song isn’t going to be found behind more music theory.
It isn’t going to be found in your next lesson.
It isn’t going to be found in another 30 minutes spent practicing scales.

This made sense 100 years ago when recorded music didn’t exist. Where the only way to experience music was in a live setting.
That is not how the world works today.
Today you need to not just be able to play your instrument but have the creativity behind writing songs as well.
But when we learn music, we are still operating under a false belief that was developed in a time before the record player.
That we need to learn how to play our instruments masterfully, not learn how to create a song that speaks through us.
How can I start making songs similar to what I am hearing on Spotify
Why am I learning music theory from guys who died 100’s of years ago
Why am I improving my playing to the point where I can nail difficult solos but I have no idea how to write a solo
I went through the typical music learning process….
Started playing cello when I was seven and simply learned how to play the notes on a page
Started playing bass when I was eleven and studied jazz
Got a degree in music and recording arts
By the time I was 22, I had only written five songs...
Yet this is how so many musicians learn how to play music.
And every day I see ads online promising how to play guitar like a pro or how to sing like Ariana Grande.
I am here to tell you that you don’t need to do those things.
Sure everything you learn will add another tool to your tool belt when writing a song. But you need to start writing.
Once I took this approach. Once I finally started focusing on creating instead of merely collecting tools and learning my life changed.
Over the past 7 years I have written 100’s of pieces of music, I have done mixes for shows on Netflix and Discovery, and worked with professional comedians like Dane Cook.
I realized that simply collecting tools to create music is a distraction from what is important. Actually creating the art.
This challenge is for everyone who can play a power chord or understands secondary dominants.
It is for the musician who wants to start writing and stop practicing.
It is for musicians who understand the current music learning process is broken.
When I first started playing cello it was the equivalent of rote memorization. When you see a note on your score, play that note. If you mess up, try again.
I had no idea what I was doing or why it sounded good. I was a monkey playing an instrument for praise.
This is how most musicians learn to play.
The average musician gets how to information but never understands why.
But once I focused on why something sounded good, I fell in love with music.
And this started a decade-long obsession with getting more tools but never actually writing a song.
I was practicing all the time, I went to music school, I learned jazz and classical theory, how to record, how to mix and finally when I graduated from college with a music degree I realized.
I did not know how to write a song.
I had spent 15 years playing music and had no idea how to write music.
The way I approached learning this craft was a complete mess. And it is the standard for how most kids learn how to play.
I knew what I was doing was wrong, but I had no idea how to move forward.
I moved to LA and hoped the path would become clear to me.
My two friends showed me the matrix behind actually creating something that I was proud of.
And that it didn't mean....
Practicing scales for hours on end
Buying book after book about music theory to understand how a Perfect Authentic Cadence works in a classical piece written 300 years ago
Learning a new guitar technique so i could finally play that prog metal song
Mixing song after song without any feedback
Once I stopped focusing on collecting tools, and instead focused on creating my life changed.
Within just a couple of years of meeting them I was working on Emmy winning projects,
I was doing the mix for Rolling Stones Magazine as we interviewed Harry Styles,
helping launch Lil’ Wayne's Weed Company,
interviewing Taylor Swift.
I was working on projects that should have required a 20+ year career but I was doing it in my first 3 years of moving out to LA.
At the same time I was writing music. And within just three songs for my artist project I had gathered over 100,000 streams.
Here are just some of the shows I worked on and my artist project with just three songs released...
I just realized that the way I was approaching music was fundamentally broken for the first 22 years of my life.
We focus so much on learning the difficult parts…
How to play your instrument like a maestro
How music theory works
How to play with others
How to write a song
And we are left with incredible musicians who are getting outcompeted by someone who just picked up guitar, learned how to play three chords and is focused on writing songs.
We spend all of this time learning about how music works, that we forget about the most important piece, how to actually write.
Now if you were to go to music school you would study harmonic and melodic theory...
How the greatest composers throughout history would create pieces...
How composers would then break all the rules that they set out and develop their new language for creating music...
And you would be lost,
just as I was,
In this mental exercise of what the “correct” way to write music is.
It is no wonder why college trained musicians have such a difficult time writing popular music.
Instead of focusing on what feels good, on the energy of a song, I would focus on rules that were hundreds of years old that have been broken thousands of times.
Just look at Rick Rubin, the man behind a mountain of hit songs from heavy metal artists like Slayer to artists like Jay-Z....
Simply start.
If you want to get better at riding a bike, learning the history of bikes is not going to get your there. Collecting bike after bike won’t get you there. Obsessing over what type of bike chain won’t get you there.
You just have to start, fall, and try again.
This is why I made this forty day single challenge.
This why I made this book.
The goal is to give you just enough tools to start. To start creating. To start being a creative instead of another player.
You will get a book that will guide you every step of the way to creating your first song. You will learn about
Energy Dynamics Throughout a Song
The science behind sound and how that will help you build your home studio and mix your song
How to approach music production
Why you need to think like a sculptor when you start mixing
You need to stop practicing. You need to stop collecting tools to one day write the album you have always wanted.
You need to just start.
You need to go on your own path, and then learn what tools would help you express yourself better along the way.
As a bass player, one of the things I have spent hundreds of hours practicing is different slap techniques.
I have never slapped in a song I have written.
While it is a cool trick, by not following my own Artist Path I ended up spending hundreds of hours on a tool that has not been needed yet.
On the other hand, as I have been writing, different tools have been needed.
I needed to play fast palm muted 16th notes for a song and that led me to developing a practice routine that was applicable to what I was making.
This is The Artist Path.
You just need to start.
Learn what you will use! If you want more rich songs, learn richer chords.
With this book I lay out the path to starting so you know exactly how to start approaching song writing.
It is everything I learned from my mentors that sped up my growth, along with the past 7 years of learning all put into a single book.
You can try to go at it on your own, but the problem is that this is such a radical idea that it can be easy to get lost collecting tools once again.
To spend your entire week watching youtube videos on different techniques and thinning you are being productive.
To collect more and more tools. To impose more and more rules on yourself.
I wanted to create something that gives you enough to get started.
Something that would streamline the songwriting, recording, producing, mixing process.
Spending 15 years collecting different tools that may never be used in your songs.
10’s of thousands of dollars on a music degree that will just get in the way of your songwriting. That will teach you how to be a great player, but fill your head with so many rules to follow that it can paralyze you from ever writing.
5 years and a lot of luck spent in Los Angeles hoping that you can meet a couple of people that will take you under their wings.
Or you can get all the lessons learned from those mistakes condensed into the next forty days.
This includes
How to create catchy songs by pushing and pulling the energy of a song
How to approach producing to create buildups in energy throughout the piece.
How to start thinking like a sculptor when you get to your mix
How to use the science of sound to create better mixes and recording environments
How to approach writing lyrics
Applicable music theory
Active community on Discord giving feedback to your songs
Much more!

My goal is to turn 1,000 musicians into songwriters. I want to help 1,000 musicians avoid all of the same mistakes I made over the course of my career.
This will allow you to create your own path through music.
Now this is brand new.
It is everything I learned over my career as a musician and a sound mixer.
I invested in a graphic designer so that this can be something you are happy to reference every time you sit down to write.
I invested in ads because I believe that this will help change your path as a songwriter.

I love how this focuses on HOW to think about music instead of on WHAT to do.
A refreshing alternative to “buy this plugin to get the best mix” that saturates the internet.
By focusing on awareness this is able to do something truly unique when compared to other books and courses. Awareness of the feeling you are trying to convey, awareness of the rules and formulas of songwriting, but also awareness that rules don’t necessarily create good art.
This is potentially the most comprehensive course on modern music creation I’ve ever seen."
